It’s been more than 4 months since Disqus introduced Disqus Discovery Box for small as well as large online websites. Since then, a number of people, including me, have tried the new revenue generating system. Let me tell you first,
What is Discovery in Disqus?
Discovery helps people find new and interesting discussions and stories from within Disqus. Discovery also helps publishers drive increases in internal recirculation and external referral traffic, resulting in increased advertising revenues. Discovery is not just one feature – it is woven throughout Disqus and a driving principle behind our entire platform.
And What is the Discovery box?
The Discovery box is our latest discovery feature in Disqus. It is a native place for users to find new discussions, stories and other content on your site and from other sites across the web. We find that users are very engaged when they arrive at the discussion thread because they are either engaging in the discussion or thinking through where they want to go next. However, this real estate is commonly underutilized by publishers because it’s below the fold. By placing the Discovery box within the discussion thread, we help your most engaged users discover new content while also helping you best optimize your audience monetization.
As said above, Disqus can turn into a great monetizing tool if you have a huge or moderate traffic and your content as well as website is good to be read. But wait, what if yours doesn’t match the above criteria? Well, then all you can do is wait and wait for even a single click on those links provided by Disqus.
Well, I would say, it’s always a wise call to bring Disqus discovery box into action only if the traffic is good and there are many who like to put one or many comments on your blog or website.
Is it better than Google’s CPC ads?
The answer is no, it is not better than Google adsense CPC ads. Why? well, let me make first thing first. Disqus CPC ads are no way near to Google’s. From CPC to related content based ads, Disqus lacks everywhere. Disqus offers no real information on what percent of revenue share it gives to the publishers, whereas Google gives 68% of total ad amount. Even CPC is not very encouraging with Disqus, as it gives $0.3 to $0.08 per click( this is my case) but google gives around $0.10 to $5 per click. What I said earlier, Google has a great monitoring system that tracks the content of the website and thus provides a related ad, but that’s not a case with Disqus. With Disqus, you will find that your webpage is displaying irrelevant content instead of related content based ads.
Conclusion
We all know Disqus 2o12 was a new thing to most of us and it was a gorgeous experience to use such a commenting system. However, the addition it brought, I mean the Discovery box, was not very encouraging. Disqus needs to rework on this very feature and make it a bit more interesting and useful for the publishers. Any increase in CPC or modification in TOS will be helpful. Also, there is complete need of a better tracking system that is able to provide relevant ads. Till then just switch it off if you are worried of less earning and visitors going away from your website. To do that, simply
